Hello, I’m Tim Smalley. I’m a Hertfordshire wedding and family photographer – if you’ve made it here you’re either planning your wedding or have another, special, family event coming up.
I have been photographing family events and weddings since 2009, and professionally since 2017. I have been married since 2015, where I was given the responsibility of selecting our wedding photographer (I passed!) and I’ve also been Best Man and Head Usher at some of my best friend’s weddings. Along the way, I’d like to think I learnt a thing or two about wedding planning, and ensuring the day runs smoothly – and yes, even having to find a stray grandma without too much of a hold-up!
My documentary style was honed long before I started photographing weddings, while working as a press photographer for one of the UK’s largest magazine publishers between 2005 and 2010, where I travelled the world photographing press conferences and trade shows in often challenging conditions, with long days, high temperatures and lots of jet lag.
Your wedding day is a special day, but it can also be one of the most stressful days of your life. More than anything, the way I photograph weddings is focused on ensuring your day is as relaxed as possible, while being filled with joy and fun. Weddings are a huge investment – both financially and emotionally – and I never lose sight of this fact. It makes it all the more important that our relationship, and that with your family and friends, is the cornerstone of a memorable day.
I am a father, so I also understand what it takes to keep your youngest wedding guests on board. I also appreciate that every family has its own unique dynamic, and I’ll always work sensitively with this in mind.
I have been to weddings where, years later, guests still remember the photographer – and not in a good way. My goal is to be a fly on the wall at your wedding and let the pictures tell the story.
My family portrait sessions are approached with the same sensitivity. Your time is extremely precious and you’re making an investment in me to produce images that create memories for your family. I want you to not only look back on the images fondly, but on the whole experience of the day – it’s the experience that makes the photos, and that is what I aim to capture.
If you’re technically inclined, I like to use a mix of natural and flashlight in my portrait sessions. I don’t like the flashlight to overpower the natural ambient light, so I set it up off camera to provide just enough fill to make the images pop – the images should look like they were photographed without flash to all but the most eagle-eyed.
Be assured that I’m fully insured, with suitable professional indemnity and public liability insurance. I have never had to re-shoot a wedding that I’ve photographed, but I have had to shoot post-wedding photos for couples who haven’t been happy with their wedding photographer’s work!
Anyway, that’s enough from me – I’d love to hear more about what you have planned so do get in touch for a chat.
